Over the summer, students have a tenancy to fall victim to, "The Summer Reading Slide." That is to say, they tend to not read over the summer, and as a result, their literacy skills diminish a great deal. That's where our district librarian/reading group leader/writing group leader/all around literacy enthusiast comes into play.
In order to fight this summer reading slide and promote or junior high reading program, the ESD program gave all of the districts 6th grade students the opportunity to receive a couple of free books over the summer. The first title, My Life as a Book, will be the students first discussion book for next year's reading group. The second selection was entirely up the the students. They could pick any book they wanted, so long as it was parent approved. From the books the students picked, it looks like we'll have a wide range of interests in readers group next year!
