There's no doubt that spending the entire summer without reading is detrimental to reading comprehension and Lexile Scores. To combat the, "Summer Reading Slide," the ESD/SVP Program is offering all of the 6th graders in the district the opportunity to choose a teacher selected book to read over the summer.
Here's how the program works:
Teachers, administration, and staff at the Jr/Sr High School were asked to recommend books that meant something to them when they were in or near 7th grade. There were 27 responses! Paula Elsloo, the district librarian, compiled the suggestions into a list with authors, titles, synopses, and Lexile scores. The students were all given this list and asked to pick a book they'd like to own, and we're going to buy them copies. Over the summer, they'll read the books, and early next year, when the students enter the 7th grade, with a new building to navigate and new teachers and administrators to meet, we'll have a pizza party where the students will meet the folks who suggested the books and talk about them!
In my opinion, this is one of the coolest programs we've had so far, and a big thanks to Paula Elsloo for the idea and all of the work she put into making it happen!
