To help fight the summer reading slide, the ESD/SVP Grant has teamed up with HHS Librarian, Paula Elsloo, to organize a 6th grade summer reading program. Near the end of the year, Mrs. Elsloo asked 7-12 teachers to provide her with the title of a book they read when they were in about 6th grade. Over 20 teachers responded! From there, every 6th grader in the district was offered the opportunity to chose one of the books. The ESD/SVP grant purchased the books for them (there were about 70 students who decided to participate!), and come next school year, when the current 7th graders start their Jr/Sr High career, they'll have a party and reading discussion in the library, where they'll meet Mrs. Elsloo and the teachers who suggested the books.
We're really proud of this particular program, and we have to thank Mrs. Elsoo for organizing everything. We're confident that the program will help to alleviate some of the literacy level loss that occurs when students spend the summer without any reading, and making sure they get to meet some of the teachers they'll have over the next 5 years will certainly help them get accustomed to their new surroundings.
