The Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention Grant enables the Hornell City School District to provide programming meant to enrich the lives of its student population, both academically and socially, at no cost to students or their families. This blog will act as a forum for students, teachers and parents to discuss programming and the many ways we can work together to make it as beneficial as possible to Hornell's students.

S.T.A.R.S. Program - Citizen Science
The partnership between our ESD/SVP program, the 21st Century Program, and Corning Community College, has afforded our students some very interesting educational opportunities. Most recently, CCC's Jennifer Sellers visited the Bryant School to discuss Citizen Science (A Cornell University Bird Study Project). She began by asking the students about who scientists are and what it is they do. She then led to students to the realization that they are scientists themselves! Making hypotheses, figuring things out, watching for cause and effect... these are things scientists do, and our students do them every day, too. She also presented out students with a bird feeder. Their mission over the next couple of weeks is to determine what types of bird visit. On her next visit, May 22nd, Jennifer will be teaching the students all about the different types of birds they've seen, and showing them how they can help with Cornell's Bird Study!
