S.T.A.R.S. Program - Hornell Art Center Trip - November 19, 2013

Through a generous donation of their time and resources, Hornell Art Center Director, Kevin Jacobs, and local artist, Don Williams, gave S.T.A.R.S. program 2nd graders the chance to enrich their art education.  On November 19, 2013, our 2nd graders went the Arts Center for a private gallery viewing, tour, and demonstration by local artist Don Williams. It was an opportunity for our students to get acquainted with the fine arts while gaining insight into one of our local artist’s creative process.

Since it opened, the Hornell Art Center has provided our city with a venue for area residents to enjoy the fine arts.  Furthermore, they offer workshops, live musical performances, and support other local organizations through extensive charity work.  For more information on the Art Center, please click the link above or find them on Facebook.

Don Williams creates his works by combining found objects from nature (rocks, twigs, minerals, even sand and dirt) with ground glass.  His large and unique landscapes are meant to be touched, handled, and explored.  He's done extensive work with the visually impaired community, incorporating a tactile aspect to his work that is seldom seen in the visual arts.  He even offered a demonstration explaining and showing how the visually impaired are able to see his works through their sense of touch.

Thank you very much to Kevin and Don for working with us!
