While this has always been a popular group, we took a new approach this year. Rather than have the junior high and senior students read the same books, librarian and group leader Paul Fox thought we ought to offer separate programs for Junior and Senior High. It's been a huge success! We have more students attending at both age groups than ever before!
Once concern of switching the groups was that the intermingling of the age groups would be lost, but we found a way to combat that! Wendy Pollinger, High School Home and Careers Teacher, has joined us on a project that uses food and culture as a platform for growth and learning. Students in both Junior & Senior High have received copies of What the World Eats, a renowned book meant to teach students about food and the cultures from which the hail. While Ms. Fox tackles the literature aspect of the book, both Junior and Senior High students come together to cook and eat the food!
The Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention Grant enables the Hornell City School District to provide programming meant to enrich the lives of its student population, both academically and socially, at no cost to students or their families. This blog will act as a forum for students, teachers and parents to discuss programming and the many ways we can work together to make it as beneficial as possible to Hornell's students.
