S.T.A.R.S. - Arts and Culture

Our S.T.A.R.S. program’s arts and culture teachers, Rick Turner and Sarah Horton, have been doing a great job combining student art projects with in depth and exploratory lessons regarding the cultures from which the art projects are derived. One of the most exciting examples in the recent past was their work on Fat Tuesday. While students made their very own Fat Tuesday masks, they learned about the culture and origins of Fat Tuesday, the traditions involved, and the reasoning behind the celebrations!

With our S.T.A.R.S. students not receiving regular school day art instruction, they’re very happy with the opportunity to express their creativity in these arts/culture lessons.

Two of our students with their masks almost completed!
